Ithaca is Dog-hater

We finally made it to Watkins Glen, New York yesterday around 7pm and set up camp. Today we started the day by hiking around the gorge but the the more scenic route along the gorge had a big sign at the beginning of the trail that said NO DOGS! We found a less scenic, but still very pretty trail that traveled the higher part of the gorge, which had a few good views. Afterwards while around camp, Nika decided to run full speed to find Emily, who was at the bath house, and broke through her collar. She went looking for Emily at the bath house, while I was screaming for her. Luckily she came back to me like the loyal husky that she is (yeah right). We then went into the lovely town of Ithaca and were told by a policeman that dogs were NOT allowed on the main street (The Common) and to get off the street immediately (hence the title of this entry.) Moments later we saw the same policeman drive away in a yellow VW bug police car (see picture), which we thought was funny. The saving grace of today was that we did find a cafe` called The Lost Dog, where each of us, Nika included, was treated with respect. So now we are going to head back to our campground at Watkins Glen to hang out for the rest of the evening. Tomorrow morning we will get up early and go to Niagara Falls for a little while and then to Girard, PA (near Erie) to camp for the night. We will be staying at Folly's Campground (in case anyone wants to look it up, it has a website) which we picked based on the fact that it has a fly shop in the campground (obviously Jeff's influence haha). Okay that is all for now, we will write more as soon as possible.

Hello Jeff, Emily and Nikka,
Ok, what have we learned so far? Ithaca sucks and anyone who drives a yellow VW bug should be avoided at all cost. And, oh yes, always lock the stall when you would rather go to the bathroom without Nikka.
Love Dad

Awww, a camping loveseat... How cute! Now it's Nika's turn to take pictures of Jeff's head hanging out of the window. Badges, guns, and yellow bugs - sure it wasn't a floral delivery guy with a chip on his shoulder?

Safe travels and good luck.

Hi, this is Uncle Brian. I was in Ithaca at an outdoor concert/weekend party many years ago. I was sitting peacefully eating a sandwich when a sweet dog came up, wagging his tail and then ZWOOP! he snatched my sandwich from my hand before I could blink. Maybe that's why Ithaca hates dogs - they have roving bands of rogue, malicious, thieving dogs there!

Looking forward to seeing you out here and my sweet lovable dog is too.

Well hello Emily, Jeff and Nikkka,
Your pictures look marvelous. Spot some new birds for me. Hope the car is behaving as well as the dog (or something like that). Enjoy the adventure....it's a big beautiful country. Can't wait to see you on the left coast.
Happy Trails, Boone
